Cortisol is your body's primary stress hormone, produced by your adrenal glands in response to physical or emotional stress. While acute cortisol release is healthy and necessary, chronically elevated cortisol levels can disrupt sleep, suppress immune function, increase inflammation, and contribute to weight gain around the midsection. Optimal cortisol follows a natural daily rhythm, highest in the morning and lowest at night.
